The Hare Krishna outlet of free meals was started for the first time in 1991, and fed tens of thousands of people for over 11 years. Due to lack of funds the project was suspendedfor 12 years, and was started again on the 15th of September 2014 right next to the Fortitude Valley Train Station.
How it works...
The food is freshly cooked every day and sold for a cheap price to the public until 2.00pm. After 2.00 pm anyone can come and pick up a take away meal for a voluntary donation. Many homeless and people in need have since been able to get a nutritious, healthy and tasty meal.
As the meals are prepared at our Govinda’s restaurant in Brisbane city, all the food distributed to the people in need is of the same elaborate standard as our meals sold at our restaurant. All the food distributed has been freshly prepared and is healthy vegetarian. It is our general policy to avoid animal products that involve the killing of animals.
This first initial year already 10'000 meals have been distributed in Fortitude Valley, with an additional 13'500 meals that were given to different charities from our Govinda's restaurants in the Brisbane CBD and West End.
